Favourite Places: RSPB Rainham Marshes

It’s always a treat to get out of London, and top of my ‘favourite places’ to visit is the RSPB nature reserve Rainham Marshes at Purfleet, Essex. Just 25 minutes from Fenchurch Street station (or less from Barking underground) you can take a journey into nature in no time.

Reed Warbler RSPB Rainham Marshes Essex LondonLocated next to the Thames, being a flat plain you’ll get wonderful views across the river or out across the marshes from the cafe (which serves delicious food, tea and coffee throughout the day, including a selection of astonishingly good gluten and dairy free cakes). I could sit there for hours in awe of the views.

From kestrels, marsh harriers, reed warblers, egrets, swans, herons, damselfly, frogs, moths and beetles to the humble starlings, robins and many more species besides, there is always a spectacle of nature to be seen at Rainham Marshes. A must visit for any nature lover.
